Holiday Safety Tips From Your Austin Car Repair Shop

posted on
In our last post, we discussed the ways in which your holiday trip to grandmother's with the kids can be a whole lot more enjoyable. We mentioned that bringing along plenty of snacks was a good idea as is taking plenty of breaks from driving.

And while it is an important list of tips for an enjoyable holiday road trip, there are other pressing matters we should discuss, and that is safety.

Whether you are traveling over the river and through the woods or on I-35, you will want to travel as safely as possible. So in addition to having your vehicle checked out by Groove Automotive, your Austin car repair shop, you should read up and follow these tips on travel safety.

Stock the Trunk for an Emergency

You will want to make sure you have all of the items that come in handy in an emergency situation packed away in your trunk. This includes:

  • Flashlight
  • Extra batteries
  • First aid kit
  • Blankets
  • Coat
  • Non-perishable foods
  • Ice scraper
  • Matches or lighter
  • Flares

This is just a partial list of things you might need in the event of an emergency. You will want to do some research on your home and expand on this list. It is always good to hope for the best, but prepare for the worst.

Be Ready for Foul Weather

While you might not encounter snow and ice on your road trip, you could run into wet weather and other hazardous conditions. For this reason, you need to be prepared.

If you are traveling to a place where snow might be a factor, there are items you need to pack. It is a good idea to keep a bag of salt or cat litter in your trunk. If you get stuck, you can use it to gain traction on snow and ice. A shovel is also a handy tool you should bring along to help you out of situations should you get stuck.

Don’t Forget the Washer Fluid

Long road trips over slushy or wet roads require a lot of window washing fluid. Keep an extra gallon in the truck just in case it gets really messy out there.

Winter Tires

If the trip to grandmother’s house requires driving in the snow, you may want to seriously consider swapping out those all-seasons for a set of snow tires. While all-season tires fair pretty well in snow, snow tires are specifically designed to work very well in this winter condition.

Check Fluid Levels Often

You may have taken your vehicle in to have it serviced before your trip and all of the fluid levels were checked and filled. But a lot can happen when traveling a long distance.

Don’t just assume all the fluid levels are fine on your trip. When you stop for gas, take the extra time to check the oil, power steering and brake fluids to ensure all is well.

Taking the extra time and effort to ensure you are prepared for anything that might happen on your trip is important if you want to reach your destination safely. Give Groovy Automotive a call and schedule an inspection before your trip.
