Gas Saving Tips from Your Austin Auto Service

posted on

Gas isn’t cheap. Unfortunately, you need it if you expect to drive your vehicle anywhere. You will need many gallons of it to fuel your car for the trip to grandmother’s house this holiday season.

If you stop and think about it, getting just five or 10 percent more mileage out of every gallon of gas could save you quite a bit of money. This is money that can be spent in many better ways, like on holiday gifts or an evening out with the family having a great dinner and a movie after.

But just how do you save money on gas? By following these gas saving tips brought to you by Groovy Automotive, your Austin auto service.

Monitor Tire Pressure

You might not think that having a couple of tires low on air pressure would really make a difference in gas mileage, but it does. Low tire pressure increases rolling resistance, which means your vehicle has to work harder to maintain speed. This results in gas mileage that could be better if you would air up the tires.

Warm Up the Engine

Vehicles get better mileage when the engine is warmed up. It doesn't take very long for the engine to reach optimal driving temperature. A fully-warmed engine will remain at an efficient temperature for up to 30 minutes after the vehicle is shut off.

Right Turn Only

When driving in the city, you can save gas by making right turns as often as possible. Even if you have to stray off course a few blocks, you will save gas by reducing the amount of idling while waiting for traffic to clear to make a left turn.

Remove the Ski Rack

Unless you are actually using your ski rack to hold skis or luggage, take it off and you will have a more efficient vehicle. That ski rack increases drag and makes your vehicle use more fuel.

Get Rid of Unnecessary Weight

No, this doesn't mean you should kick your mother-in-law out of the car. What it means is you should go through your car, especially the trunk, and take out anything that you really don't need.

Cars and trucks need more fuel to move around more weight, so if you don’t plan on playing 18 holes on your holiday trip, take the golf clubs out of the truck and store them in the garage.

Don’t Punch It

The ideal way to travel efficiently is at a constant speed. To do this, avoid punching the gas pedal every time you pass a car on the freeway. You will also save gas by traveling the speed limit. Doing 80 in a 70 might get you to your destination a little quicker, but it is also a false economy because you use more fuel.

Close the Window

Keeping the windows and sunroof closed makes your car more aerodynamic and therefore increases gas mileage.

You will also save gas by having your vehicle serviced on a regular basis. If you need to have your car or truck services, call Groovy Automotive right away.
